French Hand

Why do french horn players stick their hand in the horn of the instrument?
(this question is not a joke; just wondering why)
A horn use to not have valves. An open pipe like a horn will play some of the notes and leave others out (overtone series). By putting the hand deep into the bell the horn player can get the missing notes out just fine, but with a little difference in tone. This allowed the horn to play complete scales. This ended in about 1800 with the invention of the valve. Here is a valveless horn being used, changing notes with the hand in the bell. After valves came in the hand was left in the bell.
