Help with Fender Strat?
I just stringed my Fender Stratocaster for the first time, but I have a bit of a problem. The tailpiece of my guitar intended for a tremolo bar seems to be raised too high due to the tension of the new strings. I'm afraid the tailpiece can't be raised any higher so my tremolo bar would be useless. How do I fix this problem, was there a step I skipped in stringing the guitar?
Is it tuned properly?
If so... you probably put on heavier gauge strings than were on it. You'd need to remove the back cover and tighten the springs until the trem comes all the way down when the guitar is properly tuned. You'll have to loosen and retune the strings as you tighten the springs or they will get very tight and may break. If the springs would need a lot of adjustment, an additional spring or two can usually be added instead and may help your tuning stability.
A vintage style Stratocaster bridge (loosely attached by 6 screws) should not "float" at all. It should come all the way down and rest firmly against the guitar body when the guitar is properly tuned, although the springs shouldn't be tightened excessively past that point. This will allow you to stay reasonably in tune if a string breaks and tune a string without changing the tuning of all the others. This is how Strats with vintage style trems are set up from the factory. If you have a 2-point fulcrum bridge or a Floyd Rose style bridge, then it should "float". You'd have to adjust the springs until the guitar is in tune and the bridge is level at the same time.
